Jeremy Saffer/Getty ImagesDave Chappelle had a rough night Thursday while performing at Detroit's Fillmore Theater. Instead of being welcomed with open arms and laughs, the comedian was booed during his two-hour stand-up set, which was part of his comeback tour.
A video has surfaced of the funnyman being heckled by members of the audience, with some screaming profanities and other comments at Chappelle. One visitor shouted, "Let's hear some of the act!"
Ticketholders also took to social media to complain about the show, demanding refunds for their tickets on the Fillmore's Facebook page. "Horrible don't go. Second show last night was ridiculous. Walked out. Did not get what I paid for..... refunds please!" one Facebook user wrote.
While Thursday's attendees apparently didn't have the best time, other fans enjoyed his show Saturday night and raved about it on the same page. "Today show was awesome...laughed the whooollle time we was there," one user commented.
Another added, "Went to the show to the second show last night. Dude did a spectacular job. He didn't do many jokes, but he freestyle it all night. Crowd interaction was great. Someone wud yell something and he wud make it a joke. #funny..i understand some ppl were frustrated with the flow of show but all the stuff he was saying was funny. Ppl need to lighten up."
The Detroit News also reported that he was "calm and cool" throughout the first of his two sold out shows Thursday. "He came off as thoughtful, studied and howlingly funny, frequently buckling over in laughter at his own jokes," reporter Adam Graham said. "He was also self-aware, and wasn't afraid to trumpet his own status."
Chappelle has fallen victim to heckling before and even stormed off the stage in January when a Hartford, Conn., crowd booed him at Funny or Die's Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival. That, too, was also caught on video, with some commenters slamming The Chappelle Show star while others defended him. The official Twitter account of the Oddball Festival even tweeted, "Hey Hartford! Pipe down and let Dave Chappelle do his thing!"
