Casting Couch: Hathaway Lands Fiancé

Anne Hathaway has an engagement on the big screen while Ashton Kutcher plays a retired hit man in today's casting news

Anne Hathaway has an engagement on the big screen, Ashton Kutcher is on the run from assassins, and Naomi Watts is on a crusade in today's Casting Couch.

First up, the Rachel Getting Married star has come aboard Warner Bros.' romantic comedy The Fiancé, according to Variety.

Hathaway will play a young woman who calls off her engagement to her seemingly perfect fiancé in order to find herself. But complications arise when her parents try and patch things up between the pair, making it difficult for her to move on.

The Fiancé, which will be directed by Burr Steers and produced by Adam Shankman, was written by Dyanne Stempel and Jennifer Robinson with a rewrite by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Borat). Shooting starts in March, after which the actress will segue into work on a Get Smart sequel.

  • Every time he tries to get out, they pull him back in. Ashton Kutcher's back on the job in 21 helmer Robert Luketic's action comedy, Five Killers. The thesp will play a former hit man whose life is turned upside down when someone from his past pays a group of killers to take him out.
  • Per the Hollywood Reporter, Naomi Watts is in talks to topline My Name Is Jody Williams, a drama for Universal inspired by the true story of a strong-willed teacher who quits her job in Washington to become an unlikely global activist—and wins a Nobel Peace Prize for helping to form an international treaty to ban land mines. Audrey Wells is slated to direct.
  • Teri Polo has been tapped for the lead in Joe Dante's supernatural 3-D flick, The Hole, playing a mother who moves with her teen sons to a rural house and must confront their fears when they find a bottomless pit in the basement. Lensing starts in December. The Meet the Parents star has also come aboard for a two-episode guest stint on CBS' Ghost Whisperer as the fiancée of somebody close to Melinda, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt.
  • Rosie O'Donnell is set to executive produce and star in America, a Lifetime telefilm centering on a 16-year-old boy's struggles in the foster-care system. The erstwhile Queen of Daytime will essay the role of a therapist who helps him overcome his troubled past.
  • Harry Shearer will serve as host for the 17th annual BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards, taking place in Los Angeles' Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel Nov. 6.
  • Speaking of kudos, it's worth mentioning that Laura Linney and Kyra Sedgwick are among those being honored for their work in the industry at the 28th annual Muse Awards, presented Dec. 9 by New York Women in Film and Television.
