Getty ImagesThe line-up for the 2015 Cannes Film Festival was announced today at a press conference in Paris, and as years past, the annual event will draw a number of A-list stars.
Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron and Emma Stone are among the celebs expected to this year's competition, which will run from May 13-24 in the beautiful French Riviera.
Emmanuelle Bercot's La Tête Haute will kick off the 68th annual festival, marking the first time a female director will open the proceedings, followed by the premiere of the highly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road on May 14, which stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron and will be screened outside of the competition.
Additional high-profile films include Woody Allen's 45th film Irrational Man, which sees Joaquin Phoenix star as a college professor who pursues his student (Emma Stone) as well as Asif Kapadia's Amy Winehouse documentary (the first will be screened outside of the competition while Amy will have a midnight screening).
In total, 17 films were announced as part of the competition while 14 were unveiled in the Un Certain Regard line-up, although festival director Thierry Frémaux said there are still "two, three or four films to announce." There were also be a special screening of Oscar winner Natalie Portman's A Tale of Love and Darkness, her first feature film as both an actor and director, which is based on the novel by Israeli author Amos Oz.
Blanchett will star alongside Rooney Mara in Carol while Matthew McConaughey is teaming up with director Gus Van Sant for Sea of Trees. Additionally, Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard will star in the new adaptation of Macbeth.
It was also revealed on Thursday that Disney•Pixar's Inside Out is heading to Cannes for its world premiere. The film, directed by Academy-Award winner Pete Docter (Up), will be the first animated flick ever to be the festival's opening-ceremony movie.
Oddly enough, the impressive line-up wasn't the only surprising news to come out of the ceremony—Frémaux also asked that selfies be curtailed on the carpet.
"We don't want to prohibit it, but we want to slow down the process of selfies on the steps," he said. "We think it's ridiculous and grotesque and really slows things down."
He added: "You never look as ugly as you do in a selfie."
