Rest in peace, Amy Winehouse

The first trailer for the highly-anticipated documentary Amy, based on the life of the late singer, was released today, and the clip does not disappoint, giving fans a thoughtful glimpse into the mind of the legendary artist, who tragically died at the age of 27 in 2011 due to alcohol poisoning.

The video shows archive footage of the five-time Grammy-award winning artist, including her early years, her time in the studio and her inherent passion for music, as well as her rise to super stardom.

"I'm not a girl or a star trying to be anything other than a musician," Winehouse says in trailer, revealing her aversion to fame.

"I don't think I'm going to be at all famous," she continues, as a montage of paparazzi images flash across the screen. "I don't think I could handle it. I would probably go mad, do you know what I mean? I would go mad."

Directed by Asif Kapadia, the film will chronicle the British singer-songwriter's life and career and will feature unseen footage as well as unreleased tracks.

"Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone's attention; she wrote and sung from the heart and everyone fell under her spell," producer James Gay-Rees as well as Kapadia said in a statement on the film's official Facebook page. "But tragically Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and her precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us."

A24 has acquired the U.S. distribution rights for Amy, although a release date in the states has yet to be announced (we're told July). Amy is set to hit theaters in the U.K. on July 3, less than one month before the fourth anniversary of the singer's death.
