To walk in Olivia Pope's shoes... Would we instantly inherit some form of badassery? Could we inspire and lead a group of our own gladiators?

To channel her empowering alter-ego, Kerry Washington surprisingly reaches deep down to the soles.

"The biggest thing for me are the shoes," the Scandal star said to DKNY PR girl Aliza Licht in the latest The Edit cover story. "I'll wear Uggs around set, but I can't rehearse a scene in them because I don't feel like Olivia until I put the shoes on. Shoes define how you walk in the world and how you stand, like: what is your posture in life?"

Kerry admitted that she and Scandal costume designer Lyn Paolo were inspired to elevate conventional Washington, DC style.

"We wanted to get out of the typical navy-blue, boxy, ‘woman in a man's suit' definition of power dressing," she added.

Olivia Pope needs to command attention, wade through controversy and look good doing it—practical flats jsut aren't going to cut it. In reality, however, Kerry's own personal style varies.

"I'm a very moody dresser. For the red carpet, I am totally a stiletto girl. But in the rest of my life, I would say I'm 50/50. I love a good heel, but I also have a really great sneaker collection—that's the Bronx girl in me."

And she's no less fierce.
