It's been a little more than a year since Ellen Page came out to the world as gay. In that time, the star has undoubtedly found more confidence—and has also hit her style stride.
In the April issue of Vogue, the actress—who plays Julianne Moore's life partner in the upcoming film Freeheld—shared her personal and style evolution.
"I used to feel this constant pressure to be more feminine; a quiet or sometimes not-so-quiet demand—‘You need to wear a dress or people will think you're gay.'" she explains. "Now I feel a sense of freedom in dressing, and I'm enjoying it so much. I love wearing a Saint Laurent suit to an event," says the actress, who also happily donned the menswear-inspired pieces at right for a spot of breakfast, "I mean, what a gift."
In the past year, Ellen has been spotted on the red carpet in chic suits and tailored separates. On more casual occasions, the X-Men star is usually seen in comfortable, tomboy attire.
At the same time, many fashion brands are emphasizing menswear-inspired and androgynous pieces. It's more than just boyfriend jeans and moto jackets; with certain labels like Helmut Lang and JW Anderson, femininity is no longer defined by frills or body-hugging silhouette—but by confidence.
That confidence can be difficult to find, Ellen admitted. But it's worth exploring.
"You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress and who you have to be," Page said at the Time to THRIVE conference in February 2014. "I have been trying to push back, to be authentic, to follow my heart, but it can be hard."
She makes it seem so effortless.
