Notice Lena Dunham looking a little different lately? The Girls star has been working out!
It wasn't the pressures of Hollywood that inspired this physical fitness kick, though—as Lena revealed on Thursday's Late Show With David Letterman, her "really hot" mom and dad are responsible for her recent shape-up!
"I wanted to do it because I was losing by breath when I walked up like that stair," said the 28-year-old multi-hyphenate, pointing to a small step by the stage. "And also, [because of] both my parents [Caroll Dunham and Laurie Simmons], who are 65...they're both real exercise fiends, and it started in the last five years..."
"My dad can lift these really heavy weights and do kettle bells," she said. "They can both jump rope and they look really hot, and I was just starting to feel like I was really dragging behind. I was like, 'You're more than twice my age, and I look like a bag of trash next to you!'"
So Lena decided to follow in mom and dad's healthy footsteps, and it shows! One of the get-fit activities she participates in is something called "acro-yoga." Dave pulled up an Instagram picture of Lena and a male friend demonstrating quite the position! "Believe it or not," she told the late-night host, "that takes a lot of core strength!"
"No, one can see that your stomach muscles are contracting," Dave replied.
"You can see—I say this with a lot of love, but behind the wall of fat, they're doing a lot!" she said. "I'm not trying to get you to go, 'Oh, Lena, you're not fat'—it's like, I feel great, I feel really good, I'm just recognizing what's happening!"
This particular contortion is actually just one of many Lena's willing to try out in the name of core stretch. "I'm gonna say that if I was this adventuresome in my early 20s, I would've had a better time in the boyfriend department," she said jokingly.
Well, for boyfriend Jack Antonoff's sake then, it's a good thing Lena held off on the fitness kick a few years.
