Even sunny California probably seemed pretty dreary to Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter after the tropical beauty of French Polynesia.

The newlyweds were back, briefly, in Los Angeles following their 10-day honeymoon on the island of Bora Bora, and were already on their way to catch a flight out of town when paparazzi caught up with them.

But we're glad the shutterbugs were swarming, or else we wouldn't have gotten to see the glow on the expectant couple's faces—which wasn't just coming from the look of love. It appears that these Brits got some sun!

The Sherlock star officially has a tan (for him, anyway)—so that must have been a mild SPF that his wife sweetly slathered on him during their romantic getaway.

Cumberbatch was all smiles at LAX, while Hunter looked especially bronzed in a flowing yellow skirt and black sleeveless top that skimmed over her growing baby bump.

A source previously filled us in on their stay on Bora Bora, which included five-star accommodations in a bungalow right on the water—which, we were told, they rarely left.

But when they were out and about in paradise, Cumberbatch spent some time snorkeling and Hunter seemed to enjoy being able to relax after what was an even longer awards season for her than her hubby, considering she was the one who had to experience it pregnant and in heels. They managed to carve out some time in between appearances to get married on Valentine's Day, a week before the Oscars.

"She is well into her pregnancy and looked happy to have down time," the source also told E! News about their honeymoon.

"They really seemed in love and like perfect partners," our source added. "He was doting on her and rubbing her back and her pregnant belly...She was making sure he had sunscreen on, always re-applying it on his back. They had a lot of time alone and really enjoyed the slow pace of life and not having to do much." They enjoyed leisurely breakfasts on their private deck and, on the one day it rained, they booked in-room massages.

And now...back to London? Cumberbatch presumably has to report for Hamlet rehearsals, for he's set to play Shakespeare's No. 1 tortured hero during an already sold-out run at the Barbican Theatre from Aug. 5 until Oct. 31.

The father-to-be was most recently shooting the next installment of the BBC Two miniseries The Hollow Crown, taking on the role of Richard III.
