MTVWho will succeed Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man?
Sony Pictures Entertainment has yet to announce which actor will take over as the iconic Marvel Comics superhero. Regardless, the Internet has already narrowed down a list of possible replacements, with favorites including Ansel Elgort, Donald Glover, Logan Lerman, Dylan O'Brien and Brenton Thwaites.
O'Brien, who stars in MTV's Teen Wolf, proved he has the ability to open a movie with 2014's The Maze Runner. Rumors are swirling that he's already been cast as Peter Parker, but as the actor tells BuzzFeed News, "Professionally, I haven't heard anything about it. I've only heard from, like, [rumors] online."
So, no, his Spidey senses aren't tingling yet.
Still, it's fun to be in the mix. "It feels so weird to say. It's so funny," he admitted. "My friends from New Jersey are calling me. They're like, 'What are you not telling me, dude?! Spider-Man?!'" O'Brien, 23, appreciates the support, but he doesn't want to let anyone down. "It makes me feel bad because I'm, like, disappointing a big chunk of fans across the nation," he says. "You can tell them that it's not true."
If O'Brien gets an audition for the role, he won't turn it down. "It's nothing but flattering. It's never something I would want to get myself excited about, since I know I haven't heard about it from a professional standpoint," the actor explains. "I've always wanted to play Peter Parker, obviously."
"I feel like any actor my age, that's, like, a big thing," the First Time actor tells BuzzFeed News. "And my name being tossed with Logan Lerman's is the coolest thing ever, too. I just think that kid is f--king fantastic...I guess I'll see if I even hear about it? But thank you, Internet, for giving me false hope!"
Last month, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced that Spider-Man has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whoever is cast will likely appear in Captain America: Civil War, as the character played a key role in the comics. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Chadwick Boseman will play Captain America, Iron Man and Black Panther, respectively, when it hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
The studios have not confirmed that Spider-Man will appear in that film.
Sony Pictures Entertainment' next Spider-Man standalone will hit theaters on July 28, 2017.
Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment "are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films," per the studios' joint press release.
