Whether pulled back in a tight low pony or simply kept down and slicked away from the face, ultra-sleek hair owned the Oscars. And while it may look as if such sculptural feats require a team of stylists and a Hail Mary to achieve, the effect can easily be replicated at home.

To cop the razor-sharp look for yourself, celebrity hairstylist and E! Style Collective member Kim Kimble hooked us up with the DIY lowdown.

As Kimble noted, the Oscars were all about pairing ornate, textured dresses with simple, sleek hair in order to keep the overall look modern and controlled. To start with the look, Kimble obliterated any opportunity of flyaways or frizz by flat-ironing the hair in one-inch sections.

Next, Kimble sectioned hair vertically, from the crown of the head to the back of the earlobe and clipped it away to the side. Kimble then created two sections of hair in the back of the head with a horizontal part, then clipped the lower section out of the way for later attention. Next, she used an elastic band to tie the two front-most sections of hair (above the earlobes) with the loose section in the back to form a low ponytail directly above the loose section of hair at the nape of the neck.
