Sure, breakups can unfortunately lead to pain, sadness and even heartbreak. But if you want to look on the bright side, a breakup can also lead to some pretty impressive Grammys.

Sam Smith came out the big winner Sunday night in Los Angeles when he walked away with not one but four impressive awards for his debut album.

As to what made his work so good? Just listen to the emotional lyrics of hit songs including "Stay With Me," "I'm Not the Only One" and "Lay Me Down."

To our surprise, Smith certainly isn't the first musicians to win big after creating emotional hits. From Taylor Swift to Toni Braxton, see which other artists turned heartache into Grammy wins!

1. Taylor Swift: Long before she was just about to "Shake It Off," the blond beauty was singing a true "Love Story" on her album Fearless. Her past relationships ultimately helped her secure Album of the Year and Best Country Album in 2010. Winning big may just be the best revenge.

2. Adele: Whether it was "Rolling in the Deep" or "Someone Like You," the talented Brit left her heart wide open on her album 21. Luckily, it helped her receive six awards in 2011 alone.

3. Kelly Clarkson: What doesn't kill us makes us stronger! That's what the American Idol alumna proclaimed on her hit album Stronger, which secured Best Pop Vocal Album in 2013.

4: Lady Antebellum: You didn't think country music would be ignored in this list, did you? Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott and the entire band got emotional back in 2011 after winning Song of the Year for "Need You Now." If only they knew how many fans related to the addictive track.

5. Mariah Carey: "The pain reflected in this song ain't even half of what I'm feeling inside," the singer sang in the chart-topping song "We Belong Together." "I need you, need you back in my life, baby/We belong together." What she needed (and deserved) was a 2005 Grammy for Best R&B Song.

6. Gotye: Joined by Kimbra, the talented performers couldn't believe their emotional song was deserving of Record of the Year in 2013. With lyrics including, "Have your friends collect your records and then change your number/I guess that I don't need that though/Now you're just somebody that I used to know," we can't say we were surprised.

7: Toni Braxton: Whoever walked out on this Braxton may still be thinking twice. The singer's 1997 hit "Unbreak My Heart" helped secure a win for Best Female Pop Vocal. How can we not love this track again and again?
