Tonight, we give thanks for Sam Smith and Mary J. Blige

It's not that the Grammys have been boring, of course. It's just that the performances seemed to be lacking a certain level of power and excitement. Luckily, we had the sheer raw talent of this adorable twosome to bring us out of our haze (and it's a pairing Smith has spoken of before).

The performance of a stripped-down "Stay With Me" kicked off with a giant orchestra. Smith, rocking yet another outfit change, belted out his usual brand of overwhelming vocals.

He was then joined by the ever-amazing Blige and a host of backup choir members. It was one of the least-flashy performances of the evening, but it was also exactly what we were hoping for from these two.

And, it was part of a groundbreaking first Grammys appearance for Smith. He's already won two awards, and he's (probably) not done yet. Mark your calendars: 2015 is the Year of Sam Smith.
