Sipa A new biography is claiming that Prince Charles didn't want to go through with his marriage to then-Lady Diana Spencer (later to become Princess Diana)
The prince allegedly told a member of his "inner circle" that he "was desperate" to get out of it, according to the biography penned by Catherine Mayer called internationally, Charles: Heart of a King. The night before his wedding, the Prince of Wales reportedly told an aide, "I can't go through with it."
But it apparently wasn't just the prince who wanted out. The biography also claims that Diana felt their relationship was deeply flawed and even suspected that her groom-to-be had feelings for Camilla Parker Bowles.
As the couple was engaged for just five months after a brief courtship, the biography, which will be published Thursday, claims that Charles realized that his future wife wasn't "the jolly country girl he had assumed" but instead was a troubled woman.
The same friend and confidant who is quoted as saying Charles couldn't "go through with it," also says in the book that he tried to tell the royal that had it "been a Catholic marriage, it could have been declared null. Because he wasn't really [committed], because she started with the bulimia and everything before the wedding."
Mayer also writes that Diana had told her own biographer, Andrew Morton, that she didn't think she could marry Charles either, but that the prince told her it was too late because "your face is [already] on the tea towels."
Another mutual friend debunks the theory that Diana and Charles met at a polo match, and reveals in the biography that they actually met after she introduced them over a drink at her flat thinking that they would go well together.
The biography has caused controversy over its portrayals of the royal court, causing Clarence House to respond saying that the author has exaggerated her access.
