Happily ever after? Not so much, according to the Fox hit sitcom's pregnant star

New Girl fans, prepare for some major heartbreak.

While Jess (Zooey Deschanel) has finally found happiness post-Nick (Jake Johnson) with fellow teacher—and super hot Brit—Ryan (Julian Morris), it sounds like happily ever after might not be in the cards for this adorable couple.

When E! News caught up with Deschanel, we couldn't help but gush over how much we are loving Jess and Ryan's relationship. But when asked whether or not Ryan has real staying power, Deschanel dropped a truth bomb about his future on the show that absolutely broke our hearts.

"Well, the answer to that is always if that actor has a contract with our show!" Deschanel said with a laugh. "Is that person a series regular? If they don't have [a series regular contract], then no. If you have a guest star, then you're pretty limited to a certain number of episodes and there's an expiration on their love story."

But might Ryan be the exception to the rule?! Unfortunately, not so much.

"With Ryan and Jess, long distance gets in their way," Deschanel revealed. "But I think Ryan and Jess have a really nice arc and it's been fun to have some non-romantic storylines too. That's more fun for me! The romance stuff is more serious and I like doing the more silly stuff."

And since Deschanel's co-star Johnson previously told us he was pushing for Morris to become a regular on the show, we had to ask: is there any chance he could join the New Girl gang permanently?

"No, there's no chance," Deschanel said firmly. "He's on another show, so there's no chance of that."

Excuse us while we go drown our sorrows in wine and ice cream (or maybe wine-flavored icre cream?).

But while there might be some heartbreak coming up on New Girl, there won't be a shortage of hilarious and light-hearted moments as well, like tonight's "Swuit" episode that finds Nick and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) teaming up for a business venture.

"Jess is so supportive of Nick and Schmidt's friendship and the idea of them working together," Deschanel said. "She thinks it's a good idea, but mainly she just loves their friendship and collaboration so she wants to do anything to make their collaboration harmonious. They have this love/hate relationship, where they'll work really well together and then they'll get into a huge fight, so she's trying to keep it smooth at all costs. That's the crux of the episode."

And though Jess might be headed for a breakup, one happy couple will get a happily ever after...Jess's dad (Rob Reiner) is getting married!

"That's a really funny episode," Deschanel said. "Ryan basically becomes this long distance relationship so the whole time Jess is in Oregon, she thinks Ryan is going to come to meet her but he ends up having to cancel last minute. She had this whole tour planned for Ryan, so the whole gang decides to go on this Pedi cab tour to make her feel better."

Of course, expect shenanigans to occur.

"It's her and Cece [Hannah Simone] in this Pedi cab with everyone else running behind it because it only fits two people!" Deschanel said with a laugh. "She wants to show off her hometown and she ends up losing the ring for the wedding so there's a lot of hijinks trying to find the ring before the wedding."

New Girl airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on Fox.
