Fans of Sarah Drew know her character on Grey's Anatomy has faced a few pregnancy complications.

But in real life, the actress encountered a situation that wasn't planned for and certainly not made just for TV.

In early December, the pregnant star began experiencing contractions three weeks before her due date.

"I was in total denial that it was happening," Drew confessed in People magazine's latest issue. "All of the baby stuff was in boxes in the basement and there was nothing prepared."

Born Dec 3 weighing in at 6 lbs., 14 oz. and measuring 21 inches long, baby Hannah Mali Rose may have appeared to be a healthy newborn. Unfortunately, doctors had the baby spend 11 days in the neonatal intensive care unit to ensure a healthy life.

"Her lungs were not totally ready to be outside of the womb [which led to] an infection, plus she had issues with blood sugar because I had gestational diabetes," the actress shared. "It's the worst thing in the world because you go into the hospital and you expect to leave with your baby."

She added, "We didn't know how long she would have to be there."

Thanks to the support of family, friends and her husband Peter Lanfer, Drew was able to get through the tough days. Now, she feels extreme gratitude that her family of four is happy and most importantly, healthy.

"It's wonderful, but I'm constantly breastfeeding," Drew joked when asked about motherhood today. "I haven't had a date with my husband in months and I haven't had any time for myself yet, so I'm hoping to make a shift soon in that department."

Congratulations again Sarah on your newest family member!
