Attention all style fanatics: The elusive red carpet-worthy hair accessory remains to be seen this season.

OK, there were a few one-off sightings—Keira Knightley's dainty Henri Bendel constellation pins from the 2015 Critics' Choice Awards and her diamond-encrusted Chanel feather hairpin from the 2015 Golden Globes—but this season celebrities have favored muted tones, sleek hairstyles and braided updos.

"I was actually hoping to see more hair accessories, because there were a lot of mixed materials in hair on the spring 2015 runways," said celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena, who tends to the tresses of Tina Fey, Olivia Munn and Hilary Swank.

The minimalist aesthetic currently trending in fashion and beauty has apparently translated to red carpet accessories too. The less-is-more approach offers stars a fresh look that emphasizes natural beauty. Still, there is room for both the added glamour a perfect hair accessory provides and "normcore" beauty alike. The trick is balance.

Emma Stone's simple, silver Hair DesignAccess barrette from the 2015 Golden Globes complemented her bold makeup look. It didn't distract or overshadow her metallic Lanvin jumpsuit but ever so slightly brought attention to her hair. And isn't that the point?

"Salma Hayek was one of the only ones to wear an accessory at the Golden Globes, and I thought she looked spectacular," Marc said. "It made her hair stand out more than the others."

With awards season just gearing up, it'll be interesting to see how celebrities decide to showcase the glam factor—if they do at all.

"I'm still not ready to rule out the hair accessory," Marc admitted. "I'm hoping everyone was just holding out for the Oscars red carpet."
