If you ask Johnny Depp a question, he's going to give you a Johnny Depp answer, even when it comes to matters of the heart.

Sitting beside Mortdecai co-star Paul Bettany, the notoriously private 51-year-old actor discussed fiancée Amber Heard, 28, in an interview with E! News. He complimented the actress on a recent appearance and was then asked if they had celebrated a year of being engaged.

Depp played coy and turned to his co-star for a response, who appeared bemused but played along.

E! News had learned about his and Heard's engagement in January 2014, after Heard was spotted wearing a massive diamond engagement ring on her ring finger. Depp confirmed the news the following March, while sporting a "chick's" diamond ring himself, that the two planned to wed. He said on The Late Show With David Letterman that April that he had originally given his ring to Heard and that it was too large for her finger.

He also played coy about their engagement in an interview with the Today show, before confirming it again, and joked about his "chick's ring" in a red carpet interview with E! News.

In another E! News interview in April, in true Depp fashion, he expertly dodged a question about whether he will be a "Groomzilla" at his wedding.

In December, Depp and Heard were the subject of breakup rumors. The two stepped out together on the red carpet at a 80th birthday party for the actor's mother, which also served as a New Year's Eve bash, and a source told E! News that their relationship is "in a really good place." The pair also appeared cozy and packed on the PDA at the Art of Elysium gala honoring the actress earlier this month and walked the red carpet together at the premiere of Mortdecai in London on Monday.

Long engagements are not unusual, especially for actors and other working couples. Wedding planning can also be a lengthy process, depending on many factors, such as the availability of venues, travel arrangements and the process of ordering of bridal attire. Heard and Depp have not spoken about their plans for their nuptials and have not revealed a date.

Depp's longtime collaborator Tim Burton told E! News he planned to go to their wedding...on a certain condition.

This would mark the first marriage for Heard and the second for the Depp, who has been married once and engaged at least four times before meeting his fiancée and has a son and a daughter with his ex-girlfriend of about 14 years, French actress Vanessa Paradis.

Depp was married to makeup artist Lori Anne Allison for two years in the '80s. Also that decade, when he was the star of the hit show 21 Jump Street, he and Sherilynn Fenn, who had guest starred on the series and is also known for roles on Twin Peaks and Ray Donovan, were engaged for four years. In the '90s, he was engaged to Dirty Dancing actress Jennifer Grey for eight months and to Winona Ryder, his Edward Scissorhands co-star, for three years. He even had a tattoo on his right bicep that read "Winona Forever." After their split, he had it changed to "Wino Forever."

Depp and Heard met on the set of the 2011 film The Rum Diary, based on a book by one of Depp's friends and heroes, the late Hunter S. Thompson

"She's a wonderful girl," he had said on the Today show. "She's sharp as a tack. A southern belle and sweet as can be, and very good for me."
