She's still the girl next door!

In the last 16 years, Katie Holmes has been married, given birth and gotten divorced, in addition to starring in a hit TV show. Still, as the actress tells Red's February 2015 issue, "I'm not so different than I was at 20. I still buy too many jeans…I don't stay stuck on anything too long. I mean, like, any emotion."

Holmes' easy-breezy attitude has served her well in Hollywood. After all, the movie star, 36, admits she doesn't have "a lot of choice in the matter" regarding film roles, taking "opportunities when they come." In 2014, she starred in The Giver and Miss Meadows, and in 2015, she will appear in Mania Days and The Woman in Gold. She will also voice a character in the English-language version of Argentina's Underdogs.

"Women are complicated, in a beautiful way, and they have lots of different roles. I'm inspired by the community of women it takes to help one woman succeed. It's important to be supportive and have people you can call at 3 a.m.," she says. Just whom does she phone that early? "I have a group of friends I call, and my sisters. If I'm thinking about my sister, she will end up calling me. It's weird. Telepathic."

Holmes tells Red that she's "always looking for stories that portray women in their best light, because they deserve it." But does Suri Cruise's famous mom feel she's been portrayed accurately by the media?

"I think that it's a very interesting time for artists right now because of social media and camera phones. I don't think you ever know how you'll be portrayed. Any story can attach itself to your image," she says. "I don't pay much attention because I'd spend the whole time worrying. I just don't go out much to avoid it."

The February issue of Red is on sale Jan. 2.
