No, he didn't pop up for us here, but according to Tim Burton, he might be popping up again soon! The famed director told IGN that a sequel to the cult classic is "closer than ever" while promoting his new film, Big Eyes.

But there is one stipulation. If Beetlejuice were to come back with a follow-up story, the crazy character would only hit the big screens again if Michael Keaton, who played the bio-exorcist in 1988, would reprise his role.

"There's only one Beetlejuice, and that's Michael," he said. "There is a script, and I would love to work with him again. I think there is now a better chance than ever… I miss that character. There's something that's cathartic and amazing about it. I think it's closer than ever."

The idea of a sequel has been in the works for a long time, but former cast members, including Keaton, have consistently mentioned the project. Although Burton said he would only do it if Keaton came back, the Birdman star has also said that he would only participate if Burton signed back on!

"I've e-mailed Tim a couple of times," he previously told MTV News. "Talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff. I always said that's the one thing I'd like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another."

Seth Grahame-Smith—who worked with Burton twice in 2012, on Dark Shadows and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter—has penned the script. He is slated to produce the movie with partner David Katzenberg.
