Eddie Redmayne wasn't the only one who found Monday to be a nice day for a quiet wedding.

Martina Navratilova married partner Julia Lemigova in New York City yesterday, the tennis icon sharing her updated relationship status with BBC News just moments after saying "I do."

While Lemigova admitted that she was a bit "overwhelmed," Navratilova called being married "just really odd."

"I'm 58 years old, I got married for the first time—it's about time, right? Growing up as a gay woman you just don't ever think about that, and then I thought, about 10 years ago, 'You know, I think within 10 years gay marriage will be legal.' And here we are, 10 years later, making it legal."

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, where gay couples have had the right to wed since 2011, and 34 other states.

And while going straight from the altar to an interview might faze some, Lemigova said that she's pretty used to it, considering Navratilova also popped the question on camera during the U.S. Open.

"I was so overwhelmed and completely surprised, but I would not expect anything less from Martina," said the 42-year-old Russian-born model turned businesswoman, who was Miss USSR in 1990. "By proposing and marrying in such a public way, I think, I hope we'll give inspiration to families set up like ours, that they too can be married legally one day."

Navratilova's romantic history is the stuff of high-profile-breakup legend, but she settled down with Lemigova, who has two daughters, back in 2006. In addition to being a tennis broadcaster, the 18-time Grand Slam champion (in singles alone) is now venturing into coaching, announcing this month that she has joined Agnieska Radwanska's staff.
