TV apparently loves a superhero origin story, and Syfy is going even deeper with it: an origin story of an origin story.

Basically, we're about to learn how the people who birthed the people who birthed Superman came to be the people who birthed the people who birthed Superman with their newest original series, Krypton.

According to the official series description, "years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel's grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Super Hero ever known."

The show, from Warner Horizon TV and DC Entertainment, is being developed by Once Upon a Time's Ian Goldberg along with Constantine's David Goyer, who also helped bring us Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, DaVinci's Demons, and Batman v. Superman

Krypton joins a myriad of other DC Comics origin stories already on TV, including Fox's Gotham, the CW's Arrow and The Flash, and Constantine on NBC, but it might be one of the first to go all the way back to telling the story of a popular character's grandfather.

CBS already has an upcoming show focusing on a Superman relation with Supergirl, which is in the process of casting its leading lady and comes from Arrow and The Flash's Greg Berlanti.

While obviously the show is a long way from casting, does anyone know what Smallville's Tom Welling has been up to lately? We'd be quite interested in watching him play his own grandfather.
