Is there any doubt that Ryan Reynolds is going be one awesome father?

Scott Speedman, the papa-to-be's co-star in The Captive, certainly thinks he will be.

"He'll be a great dad," Speedman tells me of his fellow Canadian actor.

He added, "He's just the nicest, coolest guy."

Reynolds certainly had to tap into his parental side for The Captive. Directed by Atom Egoyan, the gritty drama surrounds the search for a young girl abducted and held captive for eight years by a member of a pedophile ring (Kevin Durand).

Reynolds and World War Z's Mireille Enos play the girl's parents, Matthew and Tina. Speedman and Rosario Dawson are the detectives looking for her.

Speedman and Reynolds have some intense and heavy scenes together after Matthew is suspected of possibly being responsible for his daughter's disappearance. "I saw [Ryan] outside the set and hugged him, said hello and then went and did these crazy scenes with him where we're kind of going at each other the whole time," Speedman said.

This meant downtime for the cast and crew was crucial. "I tend to go and do something slightly physical, put my headphones on, walk around the city that you're filming in or go play basketball," the former Felicity star said. "You want to do something that sort of lets go of the day."

Rosario Dawson may not have been a mom yet when they filmed the movie, but it was no surprise to Egoyan how quickly she connected with the story. "She's very attached to these issues, but I also love that fact that she's so available emotionally," he said. "She's so open. And that was just really important for this role because this detective becomes like a spokesperson for the cause, much like Rosario has herself for all sorts of women's issues."

The Captive is now playing exclusively on DirecTV through Dec. 11. The film opens in New York on Dec. 12, followed by Los Angeles on Dec. 19.
