Really Not Wild About the Oscar Noms

Daily 10 cohost Sal Masekela stars in an Oscar-nominated film! Let's give it up for Surf's Up! The 'toon's nomination for Best Animated Feature is the big story this morning as the Academy Award nominations were announced.

Well, that and the fact that my favorite film of the year, Into the Wild, was once again snubbed. It's great that Hal Holbrook received a nom for Best Supporting Actor, but other than that, the Sean Penn-directed masterpiece was unfairly overlooked. Not even a nom for best song? No love for Eddie Vedder? Are you kidding me?

The films that did get honored this morning include No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood, which tied for the most nominations (eight each), while Atonement and Michael Clayton took seven apiece. Weirdly, neither James McAvoy nor Keira Knightley were among the batch for Atonement.

Fox Searchlight Pictures

No love for Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington or Angelina Jolie this morning, either, but I'm happy to see Young Hollywood represented, with Ellen Page and Casey Affleck each getting nominated. Ellen has a film here at Sundance called Smart People, and when I interviewed her costars Sarah Jessica Parker, Thomas Haden Church and Dennis Quaid, they all predicted she would be nominated for Juno.

A solid group of nominees, but with Into the Wild snubbed, I sadly won't be feeling Oscars this year. Sure, I'll be out on Hollywood Boulevard covering the big event, but I'll be crying on the inside.
