Benedict Cumberbatch had some surprising words about his future with Sherlock. Rest easy! It's a good surprise.

"If we can keep the quality up," Cumberbatch told Vogue about the hit series, "I can't imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock. I'd love to play him as an old man."

His quotes come after a flurry of press for The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch's latest big screen role. He's also rumored to be joining the Marvel Comics movie universe with Doctor Strange and has a voice role in Penguins of Madagascar and can be heard opposite his Sherlock costar Martin Freeman in the last of The Hobbit films out later in 2014. He's been a busy guy.

Freeman and Cumberbatch will return for a new season of Sherlock in 2016, but first the duo will play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in a special set to air in 2015. Production just started and BBC teased that with the cover of the table read draft and an image showing just how Sherlock and Watson will appear in the 2015 special…in formal wear and with a mustache!

And when Sherlock returns, expect them to dive deep into that whole Moriarty (Andrew Scott) reappearance—"Did you miss me?"—and you can expect some tragedy. Yikes.

"You can always expect tragedy as well as adventure, that's just how it goes," co-creator Mark Gatiss told RadioTimes.com.

Cumberbatch, Freeman and co-creator Steven Moffat all took home Emmys for their work on Sherlock: His Last Vow.

"A special, plus a new series of three episodes—it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John, is the very last thing you'd expect..." co-creator Moffat said in a statement when the new episodes were announced.

Is it 2015 yet?
