The Real World may have started out as a social experiment to see what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real, but 30 seasons later, it's become an excuse for seven hot twentysomethings to have the time of their lives on camera.

It's still as entertaining as ever, but the reality franchise has lost its deeper meaning: to explore issues that young adults deal with like diversity, religion, abortion, illness, sexuality, AIDS, death, politics, and substance abuse.

But this season, The Real World: Skeletons is going to bring the MTV reality show back to its roots, and get real again.

The season begins in the traditional way with seven strangers moving into an old nightclub turned fabulous urban loft in the Windy City's West Loop, with the roommates anticipating a few months of partying in Chicago without a care in the world. But each one of the seven has someone from their past arrive and "they soon discover they cannot run away from their past mistakes as unresolved issues and abhorrent behavior are pushed to the surface as the ‘last person on earth' they wanted to see comes knocking on their door.'"

As these "skeletons" move into the loft, the original seven roommates are forced to deal with their past lives while also balancing the relationships they've made with each other.

When the cast of The Real World: Skeletons auditioned for the show, they had no idea they were in for another twist like last season's The Real World: Ex-Plosion.

"As I was going through the audition process, I heard about the Ex-Plosion twist last season," 25-year-old Skeletons cast member Tony told E! News. "But I had no clue they were going to do it again this season. I was just going in with an open mind. I had my hopes up that it was just going to be a normal season. The seven of us really got along great and I wanted to keep it that way. But that clearly didn't happen!"

Skeletons cast member Sylvia, 25, even watched last season—twist and all—but thought the show would go back to normal this season.

"I thought, you know, they did the Ex-Plosion twist last season. They got the drama. They got the numbers back. They got the audience back," Sylvia told E! News. "But now it's the 30th season, the dirty 30, so maybe they'll bring it back to the original and have a normal season. But when we found out about the twist, when we saw our skeletons at the house, everyone was just in complete disbelief and shock."

Despite all the drama that goes down this season, both Tony and Sylvia agree it was all for the best.

"About halfway through, I was like, 'What did I get myself into?'" Tony said with a laugh. "But by the end we all realized that it was for a purpose. It was for our own good. Looking back on it I wouldn't change a thing but about midway through I was really to bail out!"

Sylvia, who was the first to have her skeleton show up at the loft in Chicago, felt "emotionally drained" by the end of it but is happy the show made her confront her past.

"I 100 percent would go back and do it again," Sylvia said. "The experience that I had there with those seven people going through major life drama and growing as a person, I absolutely would do it again. I wouldn't change anything that happened at all. But buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride. Some people had positive experiences with their skeletons, and others are probably going to try to run away from their home states after this airs."

Real World: Skeletons premieres on December 16, 2014 at 10 pm on MTV.
