UPDATE: We've learned that Kate's 'do is actually a faux bob. (And a very good one at that!)

"Kate has sported the 'faux bob' in the past—she loves it," Upton's stylist, Bryce Scarlett, tells E! News. "This time Kate wanted people to think it was real. We also did this look for Halloween a few years back when she dressed as Marilyn Monroe."

Scarlett often documents Upton's hair transformations on Instagram, including her most recent style: Loose, shoulder-length waves. To get the faux bob look, Scarlett recommends starting with a layered haircut: "You have to first section off the top portion of the hair and divide it into a U-shape from ear to ear. [Then] gather all the hair underneath and create as little volume as you can by either braiding into cornrows or twisting the hair towards the nape of the neck," he said.

"I strategically place the pieces within the lower section of hair. Once the pieces are in you let down the top portion and style accordingly."

Even better? Kate's look can be recreated in under 45 minutes.

Hot new locks alert! Kate Upton is taking her hair into "lob" (long bob) territory with a shorter 'do.

The model debuted her new haircut on Instagram, giving celeb hairstylist Bryce Scarlett a shout-out for the crop in her caption. Kate's shoulder-grazing hair is styled in loose, face-framing waves in the photo, a look that complements her heart-shaped face.

While there was no detailed explanation for the haircut, we imagine that shorter locks will be easier to maintain on all of the action-packed dates Kate has been having with boyfriend Justin Verlander.

Upton isn't the only star getting lob-happy this month: Lucy Hale, who debuted a shorter haircut at the 2014 CMA Awards, is also trekking into long tousled bob land. The singer took her hair even shorter this week, sporting the "bobsy" new look on Instagram.

But this style may owe some of its popularity to the lady who brought "lob" into the national lexicon back in October. Lauren Conrad is the long bob trailblazer, of course—the star, who once swore to never go short again, took her hair from long, to long bob, to just bob-length in a series of haircuts that she documented for fans on social media. (Conrad and Hale both worked with hairstylist Kristin Ess to crop their long locks.)
