InstagramTwo days after his wife Tori Spelling appeared on NBC's Today, Dean McDermott chatted with co-hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb about the second season of Lifetime's True Tori and the effect the docuseries has had on their unstable but improved marriage. Spelling described the show as "cathartic," and McDermott said that it's been both helpful and hurtful. "Don't get me wrong. I'm not pooh-poohing the show and the whole experience I've had. I've learned a lot about myself, our relationship—it's been a good process," he said. "But as it goes and continues, it's taking a toll on me. It's not good for me. It's different for everybody. If it works for T, that's great, but I'm finding I'm having a hard time with it."
The Chopped Canada host reiterated that he's "done with the show" if the network decides to renew it. "I want some of my privacy back. I think I've shared too much of my soul and my demons with strangers. As you know, with that comes positive and negative reactions. It's just not a good space for me," he said.
Would McDermott be OK with Spelling filming a third season solo?
"If it helps her, absolutely," he said. "I support her 100 percent."

Gifford and Kotb found it odd that McDermott was sitting off-camera when Spelling did her interview Monday. "We've been going to each other's appearances the whole time we're here. You've got to talk to our publicist about that. I still don't now the reason for it. I came out and started doing interviews about the whole situation and not doing the show first, and I guess they wanted some elbow room and some space for Tori's interviews and stuff like that," he said. "Again, talk to the publicist. I don't know."
Asked about the state of his marriage, McDermott replied, "We are in a better place than ever. Our love is stronger. We're solid. We're communicating. We're actually having a fully functional relationship."
Regarding their four children together, the 48-year-old actor said simply, "They're great. They're great."
In a recent episode of True Tori, Spelling reached out to her ex-husband and to McDermott's ex-wife. "I thought it was good because Tori also talks to her ex, Charlie, but he didn't want to be filmed. I thought that was a great idea to give him some closure and her some closure. It's a done deal. They had a great talk." Regarding Mary Jo Eustace, McDermott said, "Having her on the show, it was to discuss co-parenting—what I believed was to talk about co-parenting—and it just didn't seem to go that way."
Though it's been a tough year since it was revealed that he cheated on Spelling with Emily Goodhand, McDermott told the co-hosts, "There are haters out there, but our fans are really pulling for us. They're very supportive. They're very vocal in the streets about, 'Hang tough. Stick it out. I've been there.'"
McDermott also said he's been shielding himself from internet bullies. "I don't know if you've seen my last bunch of tweets," the reality star said, "but I maybe not so gracefully bowed out of social media."
