Travolta's Oscar Surprise

Spoiler alert: John Travolta may be putting on his dancing shoes for the Oscars.

I hear awards-show director Gil Cates wants the Hairspray star to do a bit of performing when he presents Best Original Song Sunday night at the Kodak Theater. While he isn't likely to be busting out any of his signature Saturday Night Fever or Pulp Fiction moves, Travolta, if all goes the way I'm hearing, will be doing a waltz.

Here’s what I’m told will probably happen:

As singer Jon McLaughlin performs the Oscar-nominated “So Close” from Enchanted with 30 or so dancers, Travolta will appear. “He is going to grab one of the dancers and dance his way to the podium and then present,” a source revealed.

And this won’t be any ordinary impromptu footwork. Travolta and the dancer, the source said, will rehearse on Saturday for a few hours with the show’s choreographer.

"We have no idea what they’ve got planned for John this year," Travolta's rep said this afternoon. "We won’t know anything until we see Gil Cates at rehearsals this weekend."

A rep for the Oscars declined to comment.

Too bad there wasn't a Hairspray song nominated. I would love to see Travolta hitting the stage in full Edna Turnblad drag.
