Katie Holmes knows how to bake a batch of delicious cupcakes, as she's done so often with her 8-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise. But when it comes to preparing the central dish of a Thanksgiving meal, the 35-year-old Miss Meadows actress is a novice. Speaking about the holiday on CBS' The Late Show Monday, she said,  "I'm very excited because I'm the baby of five, and I've been using that for a long time, but this year I'm taking responsibility and my mother's going to teach me how to make a turkey."

Holmes added that she'll "pull the gizzards out."

"Turkey is easy," David Letterman reassured his guest. "You're going to roast it, right?"

"Well, I don't know," Holmes admitted. "Is that what you do?"

"A lot of people boil it in hot oil," Letterman suggested. "I wouldn't recommend that."

The host then suggested she fry the turkey. "Deep fried is so good," Holmes agreed. "Ugh! It's so good."

Holmes has already ordered a 15-lb. bird to feed six people. "Is that too much?" she asked. Letterman replied, "I don't know that it's enough...I would have gone with 20 lbs." Holmes laughed at her naïveté.

The Giver actress said she's "excited" to make stuffing, although she's never prepared it before. She'll be using her "mom's recipe," which uses bread crumbs, sage, salt and pepper—plus other TBD ingredients.

Holmes didn't reveal where she'll be spending the holiday, or if her little girl will be present. "We have a place in both cities—we're really lucky," the Ohio native told E! News in October. "I love California and New York. They both offer so much and there are such amazing artists and people in both places." Since divorcing Tom Cruise in 2012, Holmes is feeling more adventurous in both her personal and professional lives. "I don't have any fear now, I don't have a lot of rules for myself, and I don't take myself that seriously," she recently told People. Regarding her career, she added, "I feel ready for new challenges."
