Robert Downey Jr. is about to live on in the Marvel franchise!

According to Variety, the actor is in final negotiations to play billionaire Tony Stark in Captain America 3. The casting news comes after Downey confirmed his roles in next year's The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3.

So what does this possible casting news mean for Marvel fans?

It appears Stark will go up against Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) as they battle over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the government.

The exciting news surrounding Downey's new role comes the same day Marvel announced plans to reboot the Civil War comic book miniseries next year. According to Marvel's Twitter, "#CivilWar #1" is expected to be released in summer 2015.

Recently, Downey confirmed that another popular franchise was changing its course. Despite major success at the box office, Iron Man 4 was not going to proceed.

"There [are] no plans for an Iron Man 4," he revealed during a visit to The Late Show. "There is no script." Instead, the actor planned to focus on some other projects.

"I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel," he added. "I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's going to be plenty of fun stuff to happen."

Finally, fans can't forget that the successful actor is gearing up for a baby with wife, Susan Downey. After announcing the news on Twitter in July, the Hollywood couple is gearing up for a baby girl.

"Um, well, I've never really had a daughter before, so I don't know what prepares a dad, I'm asking around," he dished to E! News. "But, um, I did my part, and now I'm just going to show up and do as I'm told."

Looks like Downey has a lot to look forward too!

Marvel declined to comment on Variety's story.
