The 48-year-old comedy actor will star in and produce four new feature films exclusively for the Internet TV network, which has over 50 million members, Netflix announced today.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that Sandler was approached for the deal—which sidesteps the traditional movie distribution process—because Sandler's films consistently rank among the most viewed by Netflix members.
"When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes for one reason and one reason only….Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks," the 50 First Dates star said in a statement. "Let the streaming begin!!!!"
While Netflix did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, they did announce that Sandler's Happy Madison Productions will work alongside the Internet TV Network to develop the four films and exclusively premiere the projects in the nearly 50 countries where Netflix operates.
"People love Adam's films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the US but all over the world," Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement.
No timeline was provided as to when the movies will be released.
Meanwhile, Sandler has multiple projects in the works. His film Men, Women and Children, which also stars Jennifer Garner, is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 17, while the Chris Rock-directed comedy Top Five is due for release on Dec. 12. He will also appear in The Cobbler, which is due for release in 2014, and he is currently filming Pixels alongside Peter Dinklage and Michelle Monaghan.
Although Sandler has starred in a number of smash hits, including Happy Gilmore, Big Daddy and The Longest Yard, over the course of his illustrious career, his more recent films such as Jack and Jill and That's My Boy were panned by critics and performed poorly at the box office.
Netflix, however, has become a force to be reckoned with in the new age of television thanks to its critically acclaimed series such as Orange Is the New Black, which earned more Emmy nominations than any other comedy this year, as well as House of Cards.
