It's hard to believe Heather Locklear turned 53 yesterday.

Wearing minimal makeup and looking youthful as ever, the former Melrose Place actress flashed her megawatt smile while celebrating her birthday during a few rounds of tennis in Calabasas, Calif., Thursday. Locklear accentuated her slender shape by wearing a tight tank top and spandex pants.

Besides tennis, how else does the former Spin City star stay fit?

"I do resistance training three times a week. That really helps with defying gravity and keeping things in place," the actress told Parade in January. "I have light weights to do reps with both my arms and legs. I do cardio a couple times a week on the treadmill, with the music blasting. It's what gets me through."

Locklear is very dedicated to her workouts. "If I miss my workouts for a few weeks, it's harder when I go back," the Scary Movie 5 actress said. "Keeping up with the healthy lifestyle makes it easier in the long run." She credited exercise, "especially cardio," with helping her maintain a positive attitude. "I also love to play golf and tennis," the TV star said. "Even a walk in the evening can take the edge off a bad day."

Regarding her daily diet, Locklear revealed, "I use portion control and try to keep it healthy 80 percent of the time. I don't deny myself carbs or sweets. I just make every effort to keep it within reason." Even so, the actress said she's prone to patronizing local drive-thru restaurants. "Sometimes when I'm tired after a long day's work it seems like the easy thing to do, but the next day I regret it," Locklear admitted.

How else does the actress maintain her youthful appearance?

Locklear old Parade that "good genes" play an important part in slowing the gaining process, in addition to "taking care of what you've got: sunscreen, exercise, diet, water, and being happy and content."
