Ben Affleck's Gone Girl character is smooth, sophisticated and a little smarmy with it comes to dealing with the ladies, as seen in a new clip from the anticipated mystery thriller.

In the David Fincher film, the Oscar winner plays Nick Dunne and British actress Rosamund Pike plays Amy, who becomes his wife and then vanishes as they run into financial and marital problems. Amid his search for her, he becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance. Of course, like many mystery thrillers, all is not how it seems on the surface.

In the video, which was released on Thursday, Nick is seen approaching Amy at a party and asking her who she is, as the two drink beers. She smiles and gives a cynical response, noting that one of the things she does is "write personality quizzes for magazines." He's drawn like a moth to a flame.

"I'm the guy to save you from all this awesomeness," he replies.

The movie is based on the novel Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. In one chapter, Amy describes meeting Nick, who is from Missouri, at a writers' party in Brooklyn, New York. She describes him as "distractingly gorgeous" who "looks like the rich-boy villain in an '80s teen movie, the one who bullies the sensitive misfit" even though, she adds, "he doesn't act that way."

Affleck, who played bullies in the '70s-themed 1993 teen movie Dazed and Confused and in the 1995 Kevin Smith comedy Mallrats, was actually cast in Gone Girl due to his...smile.

"In Gone Girl there's a smile the guy has to give when the local press asks him to stand next to a poster of his missing wife," Fincher told Playboy in an interview published this month (watch the trailer to see what he's talking about).

"I flipped through Google Images and found about 50 shots of Affleck giving that kind of smile in public situations," the director said. "You look at them and know he's trying to make people comfortable in the moment, but by doing that he's making himself vulnerable to people having other perceptions about him."

In Flynn's book, Amy describes Nick's smile as "a great smile, a cat's smile," adding, "He should cough out yellow Tweety Bird feathers, the way he smiles at me."

Gone Girl the film also stars Neil Patrick HarrisTyler PerryAlmost Famous star Patrick Fugit and British supermodel Emily Ratajkowski. The movie features a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, which marks their third music collaboration under the direction of Fincher. The three previously worked together on The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The former film earned Reznor and Ross an Oscar and an Academy Award nomination for Fincher.

Gone Girl is set for release on Oct. 3.
