Jada Pinkett Smith plays one evil and dangerous villain on Gotham. But did her onscreen alter ego bleed into her life offscreen, causing her to injure her onscreen enemy Ben McKenzie on set?

On Friday (McKenzie's birthday!), the Gotham star revealed that he got hurt on set, posting an Instagram of a bloody gash on his head. When E! News caught up with McKenzie at the Fox drama's premiere party on Monday night, we had to ask: did Smith cause his injury?

"No!" McKenzie, who was still sporting a pretty serious cut on his forehead, told us with a laugh. "Although, yeah, that could happen, too."

So if it wasn't Smith and her character Fish Mooney's signature baseball hat that caused the former O.C. alum's injury, what did exactly happen to his head?

"Sadly, we know now that I'm doing a lot of my own stunts because I messed it up," McKenzie said. "I was doing a fight scene and I had to drive a guy into a concrete pillar. I did it correctly in one take, and then in the second take, I messed it up and caught the edge of it with my head. There was some blood!"

Check out what else McKenzie had to say about his on-set injury in the exclusive video above! Plus, find out why he thinks Batman fans will love Gotham...besides seeing all the villain origin stories!

(Psst...we're already obsessed with it. Get on the Gotham-loving train now!)

Gotham premieres Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. on Fox.
