In case you were wondering why Jerry Seinfeld never had the inimitable Joan Rivers on his acclaimed web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, it turns out...

He had been planning on it.

Sadly, Rivers passed away before they could tape an episode together—and Seinfeld just revealed that rather crushing bit of news today. While our collective hearts hurt thinking about what a great, great installment that would have been, it was also very touching to hear that Jerry knew that Joan was a must-have guest. Past guests have included fellow comedy icons such as Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, David Letterman, Jay Leno and Larry David.

"I just came across this heartbreaking text on my phone from August 19th," he wrote on Comedians' Facebook page. "I had asked Joan Rivers to be our lead guest on the new season of Comedians in Cars, and she was thrilled. Then we got a call saying she was going in for a medical procedure and needed to postpone."

Rivers stopped breathing while undergoing an endoscopic procedure on Aug. 28 and died a week later after being taken off life support.

The text that Seinfeld was referring to, which he posted a screenshot of, included a message noting that Rivers' publicist has said she "would LOVE to do the show this season!"

"I would have loved to have shown another side of her," Seinfeld continued. "I wanted to tell her how much I admire all she had accomplished, especially in the latter stages of her career. She was one of the greats. I'll miss her."

We all miss her, too.
