Jennifer Lawrence is dauntless and ruthless in the new film Serena, which marks her third movie with Bradley Cooper.

A trailer for the film was released on Friday. The two play a married couple, Serena and George, who build a timber empire in North Carolina in 1929 during the Great Depression. Lawrence's character, who sports a coiffed bob hairstyle, defies female stereotypes of the era with her dominant attitude and strength (and can even swing an axe).

Life seems blissful, passionate and romantic, until she discovers she cannot have children. George has a child from a previous relationship. After Serena learns she is infertile, her and George's partnership, both personal and professional, is then put in jeopardy, as are the lives of his child and his ex-lover.

Serena is based on a novel by Ron Rash and also stars Rhys Ifans, 47, and was directed by Susanne Bier, who helmed the 2007 Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro movie Things We Lost in the Fire, as well as the 2010 Danish film In a Better World, which won an Oscar.

Serena will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 13 and be released in theaters in the United Kingdom on Oct. 24 and several other countries, mostly in Europe, during the next couple of months. A U.S. release date has not been announced.

Cooper and Lawrence first worked together in the 2012 movie Silver Linings Playbook, in which they also played love interests. The film earned the 24-year-old actress her first Oscar and the 39-year-old actor his first Academy Award nomination The two later starred in the ensemble cast dramedy American Hustle and were also nominated for Oscars for their roles.

"Jennifer is such a wonderful girl," Cooper told South Jersey magazine in an interview published in August. "We've had so much fun working together and I'm so proud of her success. She's one of the most down-to-earth and unpretentious individuals you could ever meet, and it's such a pleasure to spend time with her."

The first publicity photos for Serena were released in 2012 and in August. Check out more posters for the movie, as well as the trailer below.
