Just because Lorde is 17 years old, that doesn't mean she doesn't know what she's doing.

While gracing the cover of Elle magazine, the "Royals" singer opens up about standing up for herself and remaining authentic in the challenging music business.

"A lot of times when people meet me, they'll definitely try to make me feel young or experienced," she tells the October issue available nationwide on Sept. 23. "Teenagers are such a discerning group of people. They'll immediately sniff out anything that feels contrived."

She adds, "I've developed something of a fearsome reputation. People know that if you talk down to me, I will roll my eyes or whatever."

That self-assured attitude has helped Lorde earn millions of young, female fans.

And time and time again, the "Team" singer has received positive feedback from young people that leaves her absolutely inspired.

"People have told me that I've helped them feel confident, like they can say things they want to say," she explains. "They can talk about feminism in class without people calling them a lesbian. That's so amazing that I can make someone feel like that."

Today the teenager is ready to keep making music while also savoring her latest accomplishment.

"Got to shoot with the coolest team in London," she tweeted about her cover. "I'm PUMPED to share it all with you."
