Looks like the former Beverly Hills, 90201 costars won't be getting a second season for their ABC Family comedy Mystery Girls as the cable network has reportedly canceled the freshman buddy detective comedy that follows Holly (Spelling) and Charlie (Garth), former stars of the fictional 1990s TV detective series Mystery Girls who reunite to solve actual mysteries.
According to TVLine, the network won't be bringing Mystery Girls back for a sophomore season. However, ABC Family tells E! News that no official decision has been made yet. So there's still hope for the few of you that were watching!
While Beverly Hills, 90210 fans were excited to see Garth and Spelling back on TV together again for a new show, Mystery Girls premiered and bowed to less-than-desirable ratings. The Aug. 27 season (and now series?) finale drew just a bit more than 500K viewers and a .024 demo rating.
Mystery Girls also starred Miguel Pinzon as Nick Diaz, an enthusiastic Mystery Girls super fan who persuades Holly and Charlie to hire him as their assistant, Adam Mayfield as Charlie's husband, and Ryan McPartlin as Police Detective Dwayne Freeman.
Spelling and Garth were able to get one of their former 90210 costars to guest star on the show, and were hoping that Shannen Doherty would eventually make an appearance. "We'd like to have Shannen," Garth said on Sirius XM's Just Jenny just a few weeks ago, and Spelling added, "The original threesome. Me, Jen and Shannen, so that's how it should be on this show."
