Even beautiful and glamorous women like Reese Witherspoon can have a bad day on the red carpet.

And it was those fashion disaster moments that sparked Joan Rivers' best sharp-tongued zingers.

"I love Joan," Witherspoon told me at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her upcoming drama The Good Lie at the Visa Screening Room.

"It's a hard thing because everyone loved her so much," she said. "But seeing all this wonderful work that she did, how she entertained people for years and years, it just really touched my heart."

And then the Oscar winner smiled, "She was always very nice to me and even when she wasn't I still laughed, she still made me laugh."

A funeral for Rivers, who died last week at age 81, was held yesterday in New York City. The program included performances by Hugh Jackman, Broadway star Audra McDonald and the New York City Gay Men's Chorus.

She was eulogized by Howard Stern, New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams, Inside Edition host Deborah Norville and, of course, her daughter Melissa Rivers.
