Salma Hayek's husband Francois-Henri Pinault may own the luxury fashion houses that dress Hollywood's elite, but that doesn't mean the actress didn't mind Joan Rivers' fashion take-downs.

"She's an icon," Hayek told me at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of her new animated adaption of poet Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. "It won't be he same without her—red carpets will not be the same without her."

Pinault's holdings include Gucci, Stella McCartney. Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent.

"It was of course OK," Hayek said of Rivers' Fashion Police commentary. "She invented a whole way of making fun a little bit of fashion. We're going to miss her."

Rivers died Thursday at age 81 just days after she suffered from complications while undergoing a throat operation in New York City on Aug. 28.

Kristen Wiig also remembered Rivers while at TIFF.  "She definitely was someone who was outspoken and paved the way," Wiig said at the premiere of her movie, Welcome to Me. "I think people really appreciated how fearless she was. I mean, I did!"

Will Ferrell said, "I remember watching Joan on The Tonight Show as a kid. We forget when the Tonight Show was the only outlet for comedians. This audacious woman who kind of looked like someone you'd work with in an office would just say all these outrageous things. We forget there were very few women in comedy when she started out and she just blazed this trail that's opened the door for it to be OK for women to be outrageous and strong and have an opinion."
