Miss Spain Patricia Yurena Rodriguez has revealed that she is in a lesbian relationship, becoming the first national beauty queen to come out.
The 24-year-old, who is also the country's first Miss España contestant to win the pageant twice, recently shared on Instagram an intimate photo of herself with girlfriend Vanesa, who are pictured lying on a bed.
"Romeo and Juliet," she captioned the image.
She followed it up with a message thanking fans for their support and well-wishes, saying her decision to post the picture was spontaneous. She also shared a selfie of her and her girlfriend, who is a musician and DJ.
"I don't regret what I did and I did it because I'm happy about what's going on in my life," Spanish newspaper La Opinión de Tenerife quoted Rodríguez as saying, regarding her decision to post the picture, which has more than 7,100 likes.
She told the Costa Rican newspaper La Nación that she and her girlfriend met via mutual friends last year, before the 2013 Miss Universe pageant and began dating several months ago.
Rodriguez won Spain's national beauty pageant for the first time in 2008.
She was crowned Miss Spain again at the most recent pageant, in 2013. She then represented her country in the Miss Universe competition that was held in Russia, months after it passed a controversial law banning gay "propaganda" among minors. Rodriguez lost to Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler.
