Sometimes things aren't always what they seem...

On her way to one of music's biggest nights, Miley Cyrus took to her Instagram to show off her arm candy for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, saying no more than, "My date :) #jesse #myfriendsplace #mtvVMAs2014," as she puckered up to his handsome face.

And while the "We Can't Stop" singer made no mention of Jesse prior to today's PDA-filled pics, she has frequently referenced her charity work (and sometimes, artwork) at myfriendsplace.org—an organization dedicated to helping the homeless build self-sufficient lives.

So when the homeless 22-year-old hit the VMA stage to accept the Video of the Year Award for "Wrecking Ball" on behalf of Cyrus, his connection to the former Disney star suddenly made sense.

Cyrus looked on with tears in her eyes as Jesse nervously began speaking of the "1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving and lost and scared for their lives," before he admitted to being one of them.

Committed to doing something about the widespread numbers of homeless youth in Los Angeles County facing Jesse's plight, the pop star has launched a Prizeo fundraising campaign to encourage fans to join her movement. The philanthropic initiative will benefit the drop-in service center in Hollywood she's been visiting as of late.

"I'm just getting started," said Cyrus in a statement," and I want to make sure my fans are part of helping me to give back and make an impact on this issue—we all have the power to make change happen." The 21-year-old crooner continued, "This is about helping youth, people just like you and me have the opportunity to find their inner power and potential, no matter what their circumstances."

"My Friend's Place is so grateful for Miley's genuine interest and involvement in supporting homeless youth in Los Angeles," added My Friend's Place Executive Director Heather Carmichael.
