In the world of music awards shows, the MTV Video Music Awards are like the Met Gala. You're probably think, um, what? But hear us out.

It's a fashionable affair, but really it's about making a cutting-edge statement. And with many attendees being musicians accustomed to outrageous music video outfits (think Ariana Grande's rocket boob ensemble), it's no surprise that some of the looks are downright wacky.

Just before twerking history was made, Miley Cyrus stepped out at the 2013 VMAs in a funky Dolce & Gabbana ensemble. In a total fashion 180, Beyoncé created an iconic VMA moment when she stepped out in a bump-baring Lanvin gown back in 2011.

We're not really sure where to begin with Nicki Minaj's outfit. The masked, pink-and-yellow haired style looks like a bizarre assortment Harajuku toys. But hey— it's the VMAs, and we're not complaining.

Now here's a (raw) whopper. Lady Gaga wore a Franc Fernandez design made entirely of raw meat to the 2010 show. Say what you will about the outfit, but it is memorable.

While Selena Gomez's dress won't double for a Halloween costume or an uncooked hamburger, we can't forget her architectural Atelier Versace gown from the 2013 VMAs. The exposed bustier and slit juxtaposed with the long sleeves and dress length made for a truly jaw-dropping moment.

See even more memorable looks—yes, like Lil Kim's famous purple pasty and Rose Mcgowan's see-through dress—from the VMAs below!
