When Ramy Sharp looked through her closet and couldn't find any pretty tops that she wanted to wear, what did she do? She started a company.
We caught up with Ramy, who is the creative director and founder of New York-based fashion label Ramy Brook. The company was founded in 2010, and so it's fairly new—but Ramy has already carved out a distinct space for herself in the fashion world.
Keep reading to find out how Ramy Sharp started her own company creating cool and sophisticated pieces that women want to wear.
What was your very first job?
I was a lifeguard.
How did you get started in your career?
I felt the need for sexy, sophisticated tops that I couldn't find. I had a closet full of jeans, but every time I went to my closet I felt I had nothing to wear. All I wanted was a cool top in multiple colors, so I told my husband I was going to learn how to make them and start a business. He said go for it! And that's exactly what I did.
What's a typical workday like for you?
I wake up at 6:15 in the morning to make sure my kids are getting ready for school and out the door, taking our new puppy for a walk (the newest addition to our family). Then I check emails, daily workout (SoulCycle, Barry's Bootcamp or a run), shower and head to work. I start my work day with many meetings including design, sales, PR, marketing and many discussions about growing the business. Lunch, more meetings in and out of the office, then head home to the kids and my husband for homework, dinner, relaxing and then bed.
Describe your office décor. What was your inspiration?
Bright, happy and open. Orange with gold accents is the main color. Our DNA is in the neon lit sign on the wall by the entrance; Sexy, sophisticated, timeless. The office has lot of candles with the latest music always playing.
List five things that are on your desk right now.
Computer, iPhone, calculator, glasses, small notebook and Diet Coke.
What do you typically wear to work?
Ramy Brook clothing. Jeans with a Ramy Brook top or Ramy Brook dress. Love to dress it all up with lots of jewelry and cool shoes—always heels.
What are your favorite stores to shop for work clothes?
Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys and Saks. I frequent Net-a-Porter and Shopbop.com to feed my online shopping cravings.
