It's no secret that Usher's divorce drama was brutal.

The Voice coach endured a lengthy custody battle with his ex-wife, but surprisingly, he doesn't regret marrying stylist Tameka Foster. In fact, he says "getting married at 28" was his best mistake ever. "Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced," he tells O, The Oprah Magazine's September 2014 issue, "but it helped me learn that sometimes I think I know more than I actually do."

The former couple wed in 2007 and split in 2009.

The "She Came to Give It to You" singer, 35, won primary custody of sons Usher V, 6, and Navivyd, 5, last summer. Since then, family has become more important than ever. According to the R&B icon, his favorite family traditions are  "reunions, or what I call red-cup celebrations: Everybody's hanging out on the lawn, drinking out of those plastic cups, eating fried chicken, and dancing to loud old-school music."

"Sometimes the simpler the celebration is, the better," Usher says.

The September 2014 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine is on newsstands now.
