The public may have been surprised to hear about Nicole Murphy and Michael Strahan's split, but it seems as though the couple saw this coming.

"They have been on and off for two years. There have been a lot of ups and downs and back and forth. Sometimes they were together, sometimes they were not," a source close to the pair tells E! News, adding, "They were both aware all along of their relationship status. No one did anything wrong. They were both aware of their situation and it was a complicated relationship. There are no big surprises between them."

The insider also explains to E! News that Strahan's gig as a morning talk show co-host in New York City, while Murphy was based in Los Angeles, added some obstacles in their relationship. "They have been trying to figure things out since he got the show and it became a long-distance relationship."

Although their "complicated" relationship led to calling off their engagement, the duo are keeping things civil. "They are both moving on and they are trying to be respectful of each other," source says.

And it looks like the two stars are doing all right post-split. A second source tells E! News that Murphy has been relaxing and showing off her killer bikini bod at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, Strahan just celebrated being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Strahan first began dating the VH1 star and model back in 2007, and the duo has nine children between them. The 46-year-old beauty was previously married to Eddie Murphy, while the 42-year-old former athlete was once married to Jean Muggli.

The two have been engaged since 2009, and have kept fairly quiet about their personal lives throughout their relationship.
