The Australian pop star, seen last season on Dancing With the Stars, and 19-year-old Sports Illustrated and Guess model Gigi Hadid, daughter of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster, had dated for less than a year and confirmed their split this past May.
Simpson talked about the breakup in an interview with Australian radio show The Bump on Tuesday.
"It's tough because like, you know, I have a best friend in Gigi and like, we've been together and we've been broken up for certain reasons and we've been back together and we've been broken up...we're always in different places, working, and it's complicated."
"I mean, right now, I'm single," he said. "I'm sure that things will rekindle one day but we're just kind of...I always thought I was too young and in, too, like, crazy of a position to be able to have control over a serious relationship and to be in that at this age."
Hadid told Women's Wear Daily in an interview published July 30 that Simpson was the one who wanted to call it quits.
"I love Cody to death and he loves me," she said. "And he needed his time to focus on his music and he's the one who broke up with me. We're still best friends and I'll always respect him and support his career."
Simpson, meanwhile, is concentrating on his music. He told The Bump that he is working on a "special, "kind of acoustic project" with his and Hadid's friend Justin Bieber.
"My main focus now is playing the guitar," Simpson said. "I'm not really like, dancing on stage anymore."
