Jason Derulo knows that as a musician sometimes you have to wear your heart on your sleeve.

Such is the case with Robin Thicke, who has been shameless in his attempts to win back ex Paula Patton, penning an album in honor of his estranged wife and publicly professing his love for the 38-year-old beauty.

But while many have criticized the "Blurred Lines" crooner's public pleas, Jason Derulo was far more empathetic when E! News caught up with the "Talk Dirty" singer, who weighed in on Thicke's relentless efforts to rebuild his marriage.

"I think when somebody's desperate, they're desperate," the 24-year-old musician told E! News while promoting his Sweet Summertime Showdown contest. "I can't knock him for trying. He's trying everything to get his girl back, so I can't knock him for that…I talked to him personally, and we're not necessarily like the best of friends or anything, but you know, he mentioned something about that. So you can tell when somebody is in dire need of having that special person back. And I think that's all it is."

Sounds pretty simple in the eyes of Derulo. But is it appropriate to air your dirty laundry in an album?

"As a musician, as a songwriter, that's what we do. We put our hearts on our sleeves and what's ever on our mind we just go to our safe zone, which is writing songs," he explained. "So it seems to me that it's right in line with what a creative person would actually do. I think if he wasn't creative, then he wouldn't be talking about it all but the fact that he's a creative guy, that's what's on his mind and that's what he's going to talk about."

All things Thicke aside, Derulo has been finding immense success in his career as of late. His most recent single "Wiggle" is currently No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and his tune "Talk Dirty" has undoubtedly become one of the hit songs of the summer.

"Oh my gosh, it's been a whirlwind. I've been working on this album for two years now and it's just been one heck of ride, so I'm really excited," the handsome singer (who, in case you're wondering, is one heck of a nice guy) gushed. "It's crazy. Being able to just get in the car and hear your record, it feels like the first time every single time."

Derulo, who said his favorite song of the summer is Pitbull's "Fireball" and admitted he would be open to a collaboration with Justin Bieber, is currently gearing up for the release of his next single "Trumpets" in addition to promoting his partnership with Jolly Rancher, which he dubbed "the sexy candy of the summer."

The abtastic singer is battling it out with Karmin to see whose treat will be named the sweetest, so be sure to head to sweetsummershowdown.com to vote for your favorite and for a chance to win a one-on-one meeting with Mr. Derulo himself!
