Spider-Man fans are going to have to wait a little bit longer to see their favorite superhero on the big screen.

Sony announced its updated release strategy for the nearly $4 billion franchise Wednesday at San Diego Comic-Con and it included a major bombshell about The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

After first scheduling a release date for 2016, Sony told fans that they now have to wait until 2018(!) to see the next installment.

But it's not all bad news. Fanboys (and girls) can look forward to Sinister Six, opening in theatres November 11, 2016. It's a little closer, right?

The film hopes to expand the Spider-Man universe by bringing in villains to destroy New York City and one of our favorite characters.

Drew Goddard, the mastermind behind classic films like The Cabin in the Woods and Cloverfield will serve as both a writer and director.

The Spider-Man news is the first of many big announcements expected to come out of this weekend's Comic-Con.

We're looking forward to possibly seeing The Fantastic Four cast for the first time.  We also can expect to see the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 this Friday.
