Dating in the spotlight is never easy—even when your fame stems from your athletic prowess.

Tennis star Maria Kirilenko and former fiancé Alex Ovechkin have split, according to multiple reports. The Russian-born beauty and the professional hockey player were first romantically linked in 2011, shortly after Kirilenko ended her relationship with fellow tennis player Igor Andreev.

R Sport Russia was the first to report the news, citing an official release from Kirilenko's camp which was distributed by the Russian Tennis Federation. The blond beauty, who won her first WTA tour title in 2005, subsequently retweeted the story.

"I have made a decision to break up our engagement. There are many reasons but I would not want to go into detail," she said. "I will just say that our relationship has ended but I respect Sasha as a person and an athlete, and I sincerely wish him athletic success in the future."

The Russian lovebirds got engaged in December 2012 after about a year and a half of dating and were regular staples at high-profile sporting events.

Rumors began swirling that the good-looking pair had called it quits after Ovechkin was noticeably absent at Wimbledon.

The news comes on the heels of another big break-up in the sports world—Roy McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki, who split and called off their engagement in late May.

However, perhaps the breakup bodes well for the duo, as the exes both emerged victorious in their respective sporting events on Sunday. McIlroy won his first British Open while Wozniacki won the Istanbul Cup final, clinching her first World Tennis Association title of the year and 22nd overall.

Here's hoping Maria and Alex will follow suit in their future athletic endeavors. Wishing both parties all the best.
